The UEFA European Championship is possibly
the most esteemed men's football championship followed by the World Cup held in
Europe, organized by UEFA. Scheduled from June 10 - July 10, UEFA Euro 2016 will
be held in France.
For the first time, 24 countries will
be taking participating and have been divided in 6 groups with 4 countries contesting
in each for perhaps the most prestigious trophy in European football. The group
stage will be followed by a knockout stage including three rounds followed by
the final.
The renowned event will be held across
10 venues in 10 cities: Bordeaux, Lens, Lyon, Saint –Denis, Lille, Nice, Marseille,
Saint-Étienne, Paris and Toulouse. France will play the hosts for the third
time to the Euros. The French have triumphed the championship twice: 1984 and
2000. The winners earn the chance to take part in the FIFA Confederations Cup.
The next Confederations Cup is scheduled to be held in 2017 in Russia.
Last of the two Euros were held in the years
2012 and 2008 and were both won by Spain, their win in the 2008 European championships
started the era of Spanish dominance in World Football. Spain became the only
nation in the world to triumph three major Football tournaments in a row: the Euros
in 2008, the World Cup in 2010 and the Euros in 2012.
In the previous Euro, Fernando Torres earned
the Golden Boot after scoring three goals including one in the final along with
an assist against Italy and the Golden Ball was won by Andres Iniesta, both of
them belonging to the Spanish team.
The Euro 2016 is also likely to be extremely
competitive with teams like the current world champions Germany, the defending
champions Spain and the hosts France going in as the favorites. The players to keep
an eye for include Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal, Zlatan Ibrahamovic from
Sweden, Thomas Muller from Germany, Paul Pogba from France and Andres Iniesta
from Spain.
